Liposuction has been in use now for more than twenty years and in that time, many procedures have changed and improved. One such advancement was tumescent liposuction, a technique that Dr. Hall uses regularly, and with great success.
Tumescent liposuction injects fluids into the area to be treated. The fluids are made up of a saline solution, lidocaine (a local anesthetic that you have probably heard most often associated with dentists), and epinephrine (a capillary constrictor). This solution “plumps” up the treatment area, making it easier to remove unwanted fat while greatly minimizing blood loss and hydrating the body. In addition, by injecting the lidocaine directly into the surgical site, it removes the need for general anesthesia and sedatives, eliminating that component of your recover. Tumescent liposuction is, by far, the safest method of liposuction available today.
Tumescent liposuction is also the most effective method of liposuction. When performed using microcannulas, much smaller than the cannulas used in traditional liposuction, a surgeon can achieve more precise sculpting. Working in a specific area, the device is used to remove unwanted fat. Less than three millimeters in diameter, microcannulas remove fat more slowly, but are more flexible, thereby allowing the surgeon to achieve a smoother, more uniform look. The slower, more exact movement reduces the likelihood of skin irregularities and depressions, which can occur with larger cannulas.
Patients who choose tumescent liposuction can expect much less pain and discomfort than with traditional liposuction methods. The healing process is shorter due to the effectiveness of the tumescent solution in reducing pain, bleeding and swelling. The downtime is about 48 hours.
Results of tumescent liposuction can be maintained with proper diet and exercise. In some cases, even when patients have subsequently gained weight, fat was more evenly distributed.
